ABOUT SANTIAGO OFFICE
South32 acquired an ownership interest in the Sierra Gorda Joint Venture (SG JV) copper mining operation in northern Chile.
The newly established Chile Copper business unit is responsible for maximising the value of South32's investment in the SG JV and mitigating our risk exposures.
This role is considered a critical capability of the Chile Copper team.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Business Planner will contribute to the technical aspects of the mineral resources, mine design, planning and mine operation for Sierra Gorda JV as part of a collaborative team, understanding the performance of the Sierra Gorda JV operation from a safety, volume and cost perspective, ensuring the long term mine plan is a fully dynamic blueprint for the operation to reach its full value potential.
It is integral to South32's ability to guide, influence and drive performance sustainment and improvement over time to drive value to shareholders.
This role brings technical expertise to bear, coupled with a positive and constructive interpersonal style that builds and maintains strong and effective relationships with different stakeholders.
Accountabilities
- Ensure implementation of best practice guidelines for the long-term mine planning team, aligned to strategic direction and optimized to deliver the best outcome for the business.
- Supports Life of Operation plan related discussions with the specific operations and stakeholders.
- Supports Analysis to improve Planning strategy, making strategic recommendations to achieve defined KPIs.
- Discuss and build consensus with stakeholders as it pertains to current performance, issues, risks, and opportunities.
- Accountable for coordinating with other South32 operations planning and projects teams to produce a consolidated performance reports of SGSCM operations.
- Provide support on mineral resource modelling, which may include mineral ore resource definition and estimation.
- Ensures the timely delivery of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve information in accordance with the JORC Code.
- Supports South32 global Operations with business planning and technical support.
- Maintain relationship with South32 operations to ensure governance and compliance to planning standards and systems.
Analysis and problem solving
- Analysing operational and equipment utilization, layouts, operational data and production schedules and costs to determine optimum efficiencies and reflect them in the plan and associated plan actions.
- Interpolate the impact of the South32 strategic plan as well as the South32 marketing plan and ensure the required impacts to the specific operation / s are analysed and responded to.
- Identify improvement opportunities on the Business Planning function to support Sierra Gorda JV.
ABOUT YOU
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following :
- Mining or Geology background, with experience in copper mining,
planning strategies and Resource and Reserve estimation process.
- In-depth knowledge of planning software and systems.
- Experience in leading multidisciplinary projects with strong focus on stakeholder engagement.
- Strong technical experience in open pit mining including the ability to identify and analyse options whilst appropriately applying mining constraints.
- Understanding of JORC code and its application across multiple commodities.
Qualifications for this position are :
- Mining or Geology bachelor-level qualification at minimum. Second degree or postgraduate is preferred (MSc.in business and / or Science Studies, MBA).
- 10+ years' experience in mining / commodities.
- Spanish and English language fluency is a requirement for the role.
