Organizational Setting FAO's commitment to environmental sustainability is integral to our strategic objectives and operations. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a global funding mechanism for several UN agreements. FAO supports eligible countries to access resources managed by the GEF Secretariat.
Reporting Lines The Technical Officer (GEF) reports to the Policy Officer (Climate Change Finance Specialist) in RLC and the Technical Officer (Natural Resources - GEF)/Regional Lead for Latin America and the Caribbean in the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and the Environment (OCB)/GEF Unit at FAO headquarters.
Technical Focus Identification, design, implementation support, and monitoring of FAO-GEF projects and programmes, focusing on the nexus between global environmental challenges and sustainable agriculture.
Key Functions Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, and institutional information to support the delivery of programme projects.Produces technical information, reports, and input for technical documents.Provides technical support to assessments, studies, and initiatives; technical backstopping to field projects.Collaborates in the development of improved tools, systems, and processes.Participates in multidisciplinary teams and leads working groups; promotes best practices.Ensures quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within Member Nations.Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings.Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Strategic Framework.Specific Functions Supports teams in assisting governments and Decentralized Offices in identifying and formulating projects for GEF financing.Provides GEF technical assistance and project design guidance.Monitors FAO-GEF portfolio and participates in project implementation.Delivers capacity development activities to FAO colleagues and partners.Supports knowledge management and communication for policy advocacy.CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING Advanced university degree in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, or natural resources management.Five years of relevant experience in natural resources management.Working knowledge of English and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language.Technical/Functional Skills Work experience in multiple locations or areas, especially in field positions.Relevant experience in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.Demonstrated capacity to write technical reports and analyze diverse information.Experience in preparation of GEF projects and results-based monitoring.Knowledge of FAO's project approval processes is an asset.FAO reserves the right not to make an appointment.
