Meet Fashion Designer Krista Gabriel. Hello everyone, I hope you are well. I would like you to meet fashion designer Krista Gabriel in today's post. I was very excited when Krista responded to me regarding an interview request. While speaking to her, I realised we both have something in common. We both love fashion, and we are both first-time published Authors too. The only difference is that she is ahead of me, and I was very interested in learning more about her.
Hello Krista, it is a pleasure to interview you. Tell me something important about yourself.I am from the twin island of Trinidad and Tobago. I was born and raised in Trinidad, San Fernando, to be exact. I am an ambivert, so my introverted side was okay with staying inside every day when the Pandemic occurred. Still, my extroverted side eventually missed the beaches, going to the movies and hanging with my friends. I am timid about public speaking, but I do what has to be done regarding things aligned with my purpose! I am passionate about giving voice to the pain that women experience, empowering them through fashion, no matter what level it is.
What inspired you to start your fashion business?My experience with clothing is what inspired me. As the taller girl grew up, getting the right fit was always an issue. Also, in my eyes, all the clothing looked similar. It has always been a passion of mine, and my heart is to, with continued obedience to God, deliver the best authentic clothing to my clients and bring change to their lives through the experience.
You also teach others to create their design. How is that going?I teach people to sew, whether it's their design or not. It has been great so far. I recently started, in January 2020, to be exact. The Pandemic forced us to go virtual for a bit, but physical classes have resumed, considering all safety precautions.
Congratulations on your First Children's Book. Can you tell me a little about it?Thank you so much! This book has been brewing inside me for some time now. The Power In Her Dream: Krissy The Fashionista is an inspirational book about a little girl who would love nothing more than to be a fashion designer. She encounters difficulties with her peers because of her career choice, but with her grandmother's loving support, she is encouraged to go after her dreams and continue to dream BIG!! The book speaks to identity, believing in oneself and choosing a career that makes you happy.
How was your experience writing a book?Let's say there were many challenges. Writing and having it edited was a wonderful experience. I encountered many challenges after that, but thankfully the Kindle version is available, and the paperback version will be available soon!
How do you stay motivated in your business?Staying motivated can be difficult if you let it. I had to learn that. So, I outline my objectives and create action plans for achieving them. I am accountable to my business mentor, and I have a coach who is a good friend, so I trust her constructive criticisms and appreciate the support given. My mom has been an endless source of selfless love and a pillar of strength. She has always supported me and never ceases to guide me. I never forget my why, and I pray and seek direction from God on how things should be done. At times, it's as simple as I need nature because it's peaceful, and the ideas begin to flow, which gets me pumped or looking at other designers I admire.
What do you do for self-care?Lol! Self–care always seems to be the one thing that suffers the most but is most needed. I have incorporated a scheduled pedicure on my monthly calendar, which starts this weekend, and now a little getaway for myself once every month. This could be anything, once it's the alone time because I have two beautiful children and working mommies understand how that can be, so it's needed.
I am sure some aspiring Fashion designers and Authors are reading this. What advice would you give them?It's okay to dream big, and it's also okay if that dream does not fit into the norm or expectation of society. We were all created by God with sure gifts and a purpose so never stop believing in yourself and the visions you have for your life. Your creativity is needed for someone else. Put in the work consistently and have the proper support because you will need it most in difficult times! Be intentional about everything.
Can you advise the audience on how to support each other during the Global Pandemic?Firstly follow the guidelines, social distancing, wearing masks etc. That protection is not just for you but everyone else. Check-in on family, friends, elderly neighbours or persons we may know in self-isolation via voice or video call or even physically, taking proper safety measures, of course. Many people worldwide are unemployed due to this Pandemic, so we should try, in whatever way we can, to be our brother's keeper in every sense of the statement. Even if it is a little, it goes a long way.
