The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is a brand-new astronomical facility currently under construction in Chile, with headquarters based in Tucson, Arizona. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory will undertake the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) which will be the largest and most comprehensive astronomy survey of its kind. Rubin Observatory will enable countless discoveries in almost every area of modern astronomical research-discoveries made possible by the team that built the Rubin Observatory system, and by the global science community that Rubin Observatory serves.This position is based in La Serena, Chile, and it is meant to last for the duration of the Construction period. Also, monthly visits to summit facilities, above 2500 meters, may be required in order to observe the team, the workflow and be able to document the processes at the Rubin facilities.**Essential Functions**:- Responsible for **shepherding, writing, and delivering procedural and technical documentation**.- Acts as a mentor for junior documentation specialist members across the Rubin team and takes a more leadership role in organizing and delivering documentation for SIT-Com.- Creates and maintains templates for different types of documentation.- Provides expectations of deliverables and makes sure the staff understand and follow these deadlines to provide documentation input.- Keeps the staff up to date on progress and sustains forward momentum.- Updates operational websites with procedural content from the observing team.- Maintains the operational website and makes sure the material is up to date and it reflects the current state of the systems and procedures.- Injects structure and design into technical information to create accurate and structured documentation.- Collaborates with other documentation specialists, shares lessons learned and perpetuates consistent approaches across the Rubin subsystems.- Improves the documentation process as needed.**Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities**- Astronomy Bachelor's Degree or relevant experience in understanding technical discussions, so as to be capable to digest it and explain it in laymen's terms.- Must have experience observing and/or testing at large telescope facilities similar to Rubin. Has observational astronomy background, coming from a commissioning or operations environment with at least 5 years of working on telescopes, either as an observer or telescope operator or commissioning analyst or data analyst.- Has a technical background on writing procedural documentation.- Must be fluent in English and must have excellent written and communication skills.- Must have experience writing, editing and proofreading extensive technical documentation, preferably in the field of operational astronomy.- Has a strong ability to collaborate with staff and extended team members that span from technical to management.- Must be independent, self-motivated and a self-starter; and has the ability to independently write documentation and understand when to seek additional information from staff.- Must be able to respect deadlines.- Needs to understand at what level a topic needs to be documented and what the workflow will need to be.- Must have a valid Driver's License; clean driving record; ability to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle.**Preferred Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities**:- Knowledge of Spanish is recommended.- Experience with a change control process.- Experience with version control.- Experience with GitHub, git, DocuShare, RST.- Familiarity with GitHub, Sphinx, RST, LaTex, Confluence, Jira, DocuShare.- Experience with stylistic knowledge would be an asset.- Ability to make concepts concise.- Knowledge on writing procedural documentation is an asset.- Being able to think creatively in making documentation writing easier for the team.**Physical Requirements**:There are basic physical requirements that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
